Baiting Hollow
The microcommunity of Baiting Hollow is perched right on the Long Island Sound, up the road from Riverhead and Calverton. Its proximity to these larger towns, not to mention New York City, is all convenience with no downside. That's because the only thing that encroaches upon this perfectly tucked away hamlet is the woodsy countryside.
If one thing dominates inland Baiting Hollow, it's the 100-acre Fox Hill Golf and Country Club, an 18-hole green designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. As you drive past it toward the water, through, North Fork flatness gives way to bluffs that look out on the always-dramatic Long Island Sound. That's where you will find Baiting Hollow's extraordinary Hummingbird Sanctuary.
One of Baiting Hollow's most interesting spots is the cottage community of Woodcliff Park. Nearly 180 small summer beach houses are clustered here on the cliff above the sound. The homes are so close to each other you can practically extend your arm out the window and shake hands with your next door neighbor. It feels like summer camp without the pressure of color war.
