Battery Park City
Downtown on the West Side between the Hudson River on the West and South, the West Side Highway on the East, and Chambers Street on the North.
In Battery Park City, on the Southwest tip of Manhattan, it's all about the Hudson River. When BPC was built in the 1980s urban planners focused it on a glorious esplanade. The green ribbon runs for 1.2 miles, linking together a string of kid- and pet-friendly parks. So head outside for a stroll, to get in some rollerblading, grab a close-up of the Statue of Liberty, or just catch a spectacular sunset.
Many of the area's condos and co-ops offer stunning river views, too. In addition, the Solaire - a building that irrigates its roof garden with rainwater - is famous for being the nation's first environmentally-concious high rise.
The neighborhood, bounded on the North by Chambers Street and on the East by the West Side Highway, is near Wall Street for work and always-trendy Tribeca for play. But BPC has its own amenities, too, including an 11-screen movie theater that hosts part of the Tribeca Film Festival and the Liberty Park greenmarket which offers juicy local produce in summer and fall.
