Calverton
Each village on the East End differentiates itself from the rest with a unique spectacle of nature. Calverton, just past Manorville on your way to Riverhead, gives you an unmatched bird's-eye view of its pastures and orchards. That's if you're up for skydiving, a thrill you can only find in Calverton.
It might be easier to go by car if you want to see Calverton's half-dozen farms, most of which let you 'pick your own' during harvest, from spring strawberries to autumn pumpkins. Peconic Herb Farm, on 14 riverfront acres, is a 'must' for gardeners as well as for those who want certified organic herbs.
There are endless hiking trails in untamed nature at the Nature Conservancy's Calverton Ponds Preserve. It includes over 300 acres of nature trails and has one of the highest concentrations of rare and endangered species in New York.
You may prefer staying out of the woods, which you can do - with some skill - at Calverton Links. Your little silly putter will have fun, too, at the 18-hole miniature golf course there.
