Carroll Gardens
Runs from Degraw Street on the north and the Gowanus Canal on the east, to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway on the west and south
A great place to live if you have a green thumb, this neighborhood (the setting for the bakery in 'Moonstruck') is chock-full of gardens. The streets in the area were designed with unusually deep setbacks, creating big and welcoming front yards.
In 1973, some 150 buildings along Carroll and President streets were put in a landmark district, and that report noted the 'remarkable degree of architectural unity and quiet dignity.'
Step inside, and you'll find incredible detailing like original wood trim, lead-paned windows, fireplaces, and high, sculptured ceilings. Step outside, and you'll find cozy area spots like Le Petit Cafe for great soup, Flirt boutique for handmade fashion, and Zombie Hut for outrageous rum drinks. Carroll Park, which runs from Court to Smith streets, has picnic tables, two kids' playgrounds, and two Bocce courts.
If brownstones aren't your thing, don't despair: Loft lovers can be satisfied at the Court Street Lofts, new condos which feature Shaker-style cabinetry, open floor plans, and yup, a private garden.
