Ditmas Park
Runs from Parkside Avenue to the north, Ditmas Avenue to the south, Ocean Avenue to the east and Coney Island Avenue to the west.
Named for the Van Ditmarsen family, this neighborhood looks more like the Virginia suburbs than Brooklyn. This landmarked district is filled with 100-year-old detached Victorians (Ditmas Park has one of the largest collections of Victorians in the nation), Colonial Revivals, Tudors and even Swiss Chalet-style homes. Many have porches and garages and sit on wide tree-lined streets with English sounding names like Argyle and Rugby. These homes were originally built for the likes of the Guggenheims and films stars like Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks.
Adding to the country feel of the area are apple, peach, cherry and pear trees. Along with the greenmarket, held every Saturday at the PS 130 schoolyard, this nabe is a treat for the senses.
But Ditmas Park is definitely not the suburbs. Cortelyou Road is the major shopping street, and Newkirk Plaza, an open-air mall of 30 retailers straddles the subway tracks and recently underwent a million dollar facelift.
And there are great restaurants too - Chef Graham Meyerson's aptly named Picket Fence offers upscale comfort food. And The Farm on Adderley serves delicious American Nouveau cuisine.
