Gowanus
Runs from DeGraw Street to the north, Fourth Avenue to the east, Prospect Avenue to the south and the Gowanus Canal to the west.
Gowanus, (named for Gouwane, a leader of the Canarsee Indian tribe) has an industrial, edgy feel. Often referred to as 'G Slope,' the housing options include frame houses and brick townhouses with wide stoops. Some properties still have aluminum siding, while others have been restored to their turn of the century elegance.
There is a lot of commercial activity as well; Lowes Home Improvement opened last year and a Whole Foods is set to debut in 2007. Plus the trendy boutiques of Park Slope and Carroll Gardens are just a short walk away. Gowanus also boasts an annual Artists Studio Tour where over 120 artists open up their studios to the public.
