Gravesend
Runs from the Bay Parkway and Avenue P on the north, Ocean Parkway to the east, and the Shore Belt Parkway on the south.
Gravesend was one of the original six towns of Brooklyn. Founded by a woman, Lady Deborah Moody, there is much debate over the origins of the neighborhood's moniker. It either comes from the Dutch 'grafe end' meaning 'the end of the grove' or from the fact that many of the roads end at the cemetery (where Lady Moody is buried). But the most logical explanation is that it is named after the British seacoast town.
Residing in Gravesend means living in a picturesque neighborhood. One- and two-family homes sit on quaint tree lined streets. Modern mansions, several in Spanish-style red and tan brick with sloping stucco roofs are also common. And the commercial district is bustling; trendy boutiques and upscale specialty clothing stores, like Mylo Dweck Maternity, cater to locals.
