Greenport
There is plenty to see and do in Greenport, the largest village between Orient point and Riverhead. But the reason why people gravitate here is because of how it makes them feel. So good, in fact, they would rather keep their town off the radar screen. Too late.
Greenport has a bohemian feel. Those born-and-bred there - many of whom are still involved with boats and fishing - have welcomed the newcomers, who tend to be creative types yearning for a quality of life upgrade.
The vista alone changes your mental landscape. The sandy sound and bay beaches stretch farther than you imagine. The only traffic is the North Ferry, which crosses the Peconic Bay to Shelter Island. Front Street has the expected boutiques and galleries. It also has the unexpected: a 1920s working carousel, an outdoor ice-skating rink, and, just behind Main Street, a working ship yard that dates back to the 19th century.
Greenport is also gaining a reputation for its food, most notably the Frisky Oyster restaurant. The real frisky oysters, however, are found in Pipes Cove and are the favorites at the Grand Central Oyster Bar. And then there's Aldo's Too, a cafe where the real Aldo roasts and brews the best espresso this side of Italy and makes the best biscotti this side of heaven.
