Greenwich Village

Downtown Central, from Houston Street to 14th Street, from the Bowery to Seventh Avenue

Sometimes just known as 'The Village,' this historic neighborhood is now famous for its outdoor cafes, legendary jazz spots, and magical little shops.

The area, which runs from Houston to 14th Streets, centers around Washington Square. The park there is a dog-friendly oasis with an iconic arch designed by Stanford White; on the north side are the same beautiful nineteenth-century townhouses Henry James wrote about.

The Village is fully of lively ghosts; if you're thirsty, try the Cedar Tavern, a dark pub that's an offshoot of the bar that once threw out painter Jackson Pollock and writer Jack Kerouac for misbehavior. Cross Sixth Avenue and you start to fade into an area so popular that it insists on being called the 'West Village.' There you'll hit historic music spots like the Blue Note and the Village Vanguard, stages to Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonius Monk.
