You may know her from the broker's blog or as New York City's first certified eco-broker. But in this episode of the Hunt, Susan Singer accompanies Alison Berna on her hunt for an eco-friendly apartment in New York. Alison is owner http://www.appleseedsnyc.com/ of Appleseeds, a child play area. She and her husband want to move with their two kids out of their Chelsea digs. Alison wants to set an example for her children, while offering them superior health options and move to a green building. She wants a third bedroom (there might be another bun in the oven soon) and has a budget of around $2 million.
And she could have no better shepherd than Susan Singer. Susan first brings Alison to The River House located at 1 River Terrace. The sample apartment is 1,449 square feet and is 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. It is listed on the market for $1,590,000. From a green perspective, all of the fixtures are made with reclaimed, recycled or sustainable materials. The air is re-filtered every 3 hours and the building saves over 30,000 gallons of water a year by recycling rain water. The bathrooms maximize water energy efficiency with dual flush toilets. But the apartment also proves that green design doesn't have to come at the cost of interior design. There are modern fixtures and sleek design elements like tuck in cabinets and shelves. It is this type of fusion of design and green consciousness which makes Alison excited about potentially calling the River House home.
The next leg of their journey is the Visionaire located at 7 Little West Street. This apartment is 1,681 square feet and is 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. There is bamboo wood in the kitchen, tumble granite and a recycled glass backwash. This apartment also has an air filtration system and certainly passes muster on the eco scale. But the apartment still looks fresh and modern. As Alison herself says, it's nice to see that a green building can have so many modern amenities.
The only question remaining after touring these homes, as Alison herself says, how could you not go green?
