Harlem

Uptown, from 110th Street to 155th Street, from the East River to Manhattan and St. Nicholas Avenues

One of the many things Harlem is famous for is its beautiful architecture, evident in its many brownstones and historic churches, like Salem United Methodist and Metropolitan Baptist, as well as the influential Abyssinian Baptist Church. The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and the Studio Museum in Harlem serve as keepers of the area's African-American cultural history.

Harlem's vibrant residential life is complemented by an array of food shops such as Fairway Uptown (a foodie's paradise) and Citarella, popular retail outlets such as Disney, Old Navy, HMV, Marshall's, Circuit City, and smaller boutiques like iXukuma and Harlemade.

For a night out, there's no beating amateur night at the Apollo Theater - an institution which launched the careers of Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown and Lauryn Hill.
