Hypoluxo

Hypoluxo is nestled in the heart of Palm Beach County, Florida, on the shores of the Intracoastal Waterway between Lake Worth and Boynton Beach. The name Hypoluxo comes from the Seminole name for Lake Worth, roughly translated 'water all around - no get out.'

Hypoluxo is famed as the home of the 'Barefoot Mailmen.' Back in 1885, the primitive communication lines between Jupiter and Miami were greatly expanded with the establishment of the Star Mail Route. E. R. Bradley (his namesake restaurant is a popular waterfront eatery in downtown West Palm Beach) was commissioned to take the mail by rowboat from the West Palm Beach terminus of the Celestial Railroad to Hypoluxo, then by foot along the beaches for the 60 miles to Miami -- a dangerous round trip that took six days. These Barefoot Mailmen are a true Florida legend.

Today, Hypoluxo's Key West-style Town Hall is also home to the Hypoluxo Hammock, a site that recreates what the town would have looked like 100 years ago to the Barefoot Mailman as he began his trek to Miami.

A small town slightly less than one square mile in size, Hypoluxo is three miles north of Boynton Beach. Even though its population barely exceeds 2,000 residents, it is home to the very popular and prestigious Palm Beach Yacht Center. Hypoluxo appeals to the person who enjoys their solitude but also enjoys easy access to the huge range of entertainment, cultural and dining options of its neighboring towns.
