Originally, the homes that were built on Jupiter Island were relatively modest affairs - single-story winter retreats for American millionaires and their families. These were places that would equally welcome vacationing grandchildren or cocktail parties for visiting heads of state. Today, the homes on Jupiter Island are much larger, lavish and more elaborate, reflecting the taste of those desiring to own a piece of this oceanfront paradise.

The Town of Jupiter Island is situated on a barrier island that runs from the south end of Martin County to the Jupiter Inlet. The Town consists of approximately 1,643 acres of land bound on the east by miles of ocean frontage and on the west by the Intracoastal Waterway. Jupiter Island's permanent population is almost 600, with a seasonal population just under 2,000.

One of Jupiter Island's most surprising facets is its preservation of natural resources. In fact, after the residential development of secluded estates, the primary use of land is conservation/preservation. The few commercial land uses within the Town exist primarily to serve residents. The remaining vacant land is designated for single-family residential or recreational and conservation uses.

Early speculators and developers originally planned to create an 'East Coast Hollywood' in the Jupiter Island and Hobe Sound area. Their plans for the mainland parcel called for a Grecian-style town named Picture City, which would be home to production companies, studios and other film-related businesses. The movie stars, producers and directors would then be encouraged them to make their homes on Jupiter Island in Olympia Beach and Bon Air Beach. While those plans never did come to fruition, Jupiter Island has long been home (or second home) to its fair share of the rich, famous and powerful.

Today, golfers Greg Norman, Nick Price, and Tiger Woods live on this 17-mile-long stretch of coveted real estate. Other celebrities who have called Jupiter Island home include: golfer Lee Trevino, former president George H.W. Bush (whose parents Senator Prescott and Dorothy Bush were among the island's earliest inhabitants), crooners Perry Como and Celine Dion, Lehman Brothers CEO Richard S. Fuld, Jr., diplomat W. Averell Harriman, former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert A. Lovett, former U.S. Ambassador Joseph Verner Reed, actor Burt Reynolds, and baseball star Mike Schmidt.
