Meatpacking District
Downtown West, Houston Street to 14th Street, Seventh Avenue to the Hudson River
Ah, the West Village - the kind of neighborhood where the intersection of West 4th Street with West 10th Street would not be discouraged as chaos, but encouraged as art!
The West Village (the extension of Greenwich Village west of Seventh Avenue, running from Houston to 14th Streets) certainly follows its own jazzy rhythms. Spend a day browsing the West Village's bookstores, cozy cafes, and antique shops and you'll think you're in Paris. Head to the Meatpacking District on the Village's Western edge - the area that counts Jeffrey New York, Stella McCartney, and Alexander McQueen among its fashion offerings - and you'll think you're in Milan.
At just nine-and-a-half feet wide, 75 Bedford Street has the distinction of being 'the narrowest house in the City.' Cute townhouse apartments on leafy streets are plentiful here, though many of them aren't as small as they look. Postwar lovers can also find something to call their own. If you need a downtown showstopper, try Richard Meier's Perry Street towers, which offer amazing views of the Hudson.
