The Neighborhood

Character Meets Class Meets Convenience

Buyers at GreeneHouse condominiums will benefit from a luxury lifestyle set in the heart of historically rich, quiet yet conveniently located Fort Greene. Fashionable among both professionals and families, the neighborhood has enjoyed an overwhelming renaissance and is home to many contented Manhattan transplants and commuters who are privileged to live among some of the city's best parkland…not to mention some of the finest brownstones built between the 1840s and 1900s.

GreeneHouse sits virtually at the edge of the Fort Greene Historic District, which spans from north of Fulton Street to DeKalb Avenue, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music Historic District south of Fulton Street to the Brooklyn Academy of Music, America’s oldest performing arts center. Other impressive area landmarks include the 1862 Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn’s tallest building, and the Williamsburgh Savings Bank at One Hanson Place.

Architectural integrity also combines with lush greenery in Fort Greene. Directly across the street from GreeneHouse is quaint Culyer-Gore park, a triangular resting and recreation spot for individuals and families with its lovely landscaping and playground for children. Also close by is wonderful Fort Greene Park, the oldest park in America, with its rows of stately chestnut trees along charming cobblestone walks.

Residents will also be treated to an eclectic group of restaurants like Locanda Vini & Olii on Gates Avenue, Scopella, La Table and Gia on Lafayette Avenue and Cafe Lafayette on S. Portland. Shopping along DeKalb and Adelphi abounds.

Today Fort Greene is home to not only commuters and nesters, but artists and other creative icons as well, among them jazz musician Cassandra Wilson and filmmaker Spike Lee, whose production companies are headquartered on DeKalb Avenue.

Literally up the hill one also finds the graceful 19th-century residential enclave named for New York Governor DeWitt Clinton. Home to Pratt Institute, Clinton Hill is also an intriguing neighborhood of lovingly restored brownstones and mansions, built along wide, tree-lined boulevards and darling side streets. This quarter, also known as the 'brownstone belt,' is equally filled with numerous city landmarks including the Emmanuel Baptist Church and the Steele-Skinner House, both on Lafayette Avenue, as well as the Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew, and the Royal Castle Apartments on Clinton Avenue.

A Taste of History

Fort Greene’s first resident was Peter Caesar Alberti, also Brooklyn’s first Italian settler. Named for prominent general Nathaniel Greene who supervised the building of Fort Putnam during the American Revolution, Fort Greene is today a microcosm of Brooklyn diversity at its best.
