Lefferts Gardens
Runs from Empire Boulevard to the north, Clarkson Avenue to the south, Ocean Avenue and Prospect Park to the west and Nostrand Avenue to the east.
Houses, houses and more houses: Brooklyn’s bedroom community, Lefferts Gardens, and its historic district, Lefferts Manor, have an array of architecturally diverse homes for sale and apartments to buy. This quiet residential neighborhood of Lefferts has homes built in the architectural styles of Victorian, Neo-Renaissance, Romanesque Revival, Neo-Georgian, Federal and Tudor (a far greater variety than one finds in typical brownstone Brooklyn).
These two-story, three-story and four-story homes were built from 1890 to the 1920s, and Lefferts Gardens also has detached homes to buy built in the 1930s and 1940s. As the name of the neighborhood implies, green is an amenity of many of these Lefferts Gardens houses.
Lefferts Gardens also includes the historic district of Lefferts Manor, which is located along the eastern edge of Prospect Park and is full of single-family homes that can never be divided into apartments. The reason: the homes for sale between Lincoln Road and Fenimore Street, from Flatbush Avenue to Rogers Avenue, all descend from James’ Lefferts original estate, and when he divided it into 600 residential lots in 1893, he established a still-existing covenant forbidding multi-family dwellings.
However, if you are looking for something a bit more modern, Lefferts has new condo developments with units for sale on the horizon.
While Lefferts Gardens is quiet, it has its hangouts. Brooklyn eatery pioneer Jim Mamary recently opened a BBQ joint (with its own smoker) as well as the unique Mexican restaurant Café Enduro. Plus longtime stalwart K-Dogg and Dunebuggy on Lincoln Road is owned by local residents: Sit in this hip café, sip a latte, and surf the web. And it’s all just a half-hour subway ride to downtown Manhattan on the Q train.
