New Suffolk
The coastal hamlet of New Suffolk may be very tiny, but it has big-time views of the Peconic Bay. The hamlet still has the feel of an old fishing village, although today it is better known for pleasure boating in the bay or creeks. People who live there tend to chart their lives by the ebb and flow of the tide.
Located south of Cutchogue, New Suffolk is a treasure. National Geographic dubs it 'one of America's most charming, out-of-the-way towns.' People who crave light - and who doesn't - will be enticed by the National Weather Service's description of New Suffolk as 'the sunniest spot in all of New York State.'
Much of New Suffolk's story-book history is alive and well today. Case in point is New Suffolk's iconic little red school house, which is listed in the National Register. It is not, however, a museum. This two-room slice of the past is still a grade school with about a dozen students. The past is very present here on the bay.
