This rare and distinctive residence is unique to 1020 Fifth Avenue. There is virtually nothing else which compares to it - now or ever, on the market - all the way up and down Fifth Avenue. The building’s architects, Warren & Wetmore, designed 6 of its 13 apartments with “rooms of noble proportions,” as the 1925 sales brochure stated. These 6 have a 20 by 40 foot “salon,” with a ceiling height of 18 feet. The eighth floor apartment includes one such treasured salon, facing Fifth Avenue and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There were 14 original rooms, the others with ceiling heights of 10 feet, including 4-5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, 5 staff rooms, formal dining room, kitchen, corner library with a magnificent southern and western outlook, and 4 fireplaces. While the eighth floor apartment has been updated, it has not traded for decades and maintains a vast array of prewar details. It was featured on the cover of Architectural Digest, following a renovation by the world renowned architect and designer Peter Marino, highlighting his dramatic Louis XV-style paneling in the salon. As currently configured, the apartment has 9 rooms, with 4 bathrooms and 2 powder rooms. One staff room remains, while 2 have been incorporated into the master suite and 2 others into a fourth bedroom now setup as a gym. The primary public rooms and bedrooms are true to the original floor plan. The apartment is in excellent condition and awaits its new 21st century owners.

Additional features of this property include: Dogs Require Board Approval and The Building is Landmarked.

Upper East Side

Upper East Side

Upper East, from 59th Street to 110th Street, from the East River to Fifth Avenue, with Sutton Place and Carnegie Hill as separate enclaves.

The Upper East Side historically exemplifies serious landmark-type apartments but remains a neighborhood where a co-op or condo can be found for everyone. Strict co-ops (some with incredible Central Park views) continue to prevail in the Upper East Side from Park to Fifth Avenues, but there are plenty of studios, one- and two-bedroom condos, and rentals on the Upper East Side as well. Newer luxury condo buildings include the Laurel, with a world-class gym that would satisfy any athlete, the Lucida, and the Brompton.

Illustrious Upper East Side 1925 Pre-War Co-Op

With only thirteen apartments in total, this is one of the finest buildings on Fifth Avenue. It is markedly distinct from its neighbors, with a limestone façade and six giant banks of windows running up the side. This is because the architects, Warren and Wetmore, developed an intricate system of staggered floors to give six of the apartments “rooms of truly noble proportions.” They feature grand 20 by 40 foot “salons” with 18 foot ceiling heights. All of the apartments have generous room sizes, and each have three to five bedrooms and three to five staff rooms originally.
