404 Riverside Drive, also known as The Strathmore, is an architecturally distinguished prewar building with a full-time staff including doormen, handymen, porters and a live-in resident manager. Resident amenities include a laundry room, bicycle room and storage room. Pets are permitted. One of Riverside Drive's great apartment buildings, the 12-story building was designed by preeminent architects, Simon Schwartz and Arthur Gross, in 1909 and converted to cooperative in 1967. The original architects planned each floor to have two 10-room apartments with "exceptional high ceilings, complex plasterwork moldings, walnut paneling, and elaborately bordered parquet floors." Incredibly rich in history, the site originally owned by John Jacob Astor, was sold to renowned Bing & Bing Realty, by Astor’s son, William Waldorf Astor. It was Bing and Bing, one of the most important apartment real estate developers in NYC in the early 20th century, who engaged the original architects, Schwartz & Gross. Bing & Bing buildings are regarded as among the city's top luxury prewar properties. Within a few months of completed construction, the NY Times was calling 404 RSD “one of the finest structures of its kind in the upper end of the Drive."
