Clinton Hill restaurants

Whether you desire a gluten-free vegan burger, or an Angus beef steak with all the trimmings, you’ll find whatever you’re raving in this Brooklyn neighborhood. Your biggest problem is choosing whether to choose down-home cafes serving heaping plates of comfort food, or upscale vegetarian nouveau cuisine. Clinton Hills has it all.

Your first or last stop should be Urban Vintage. This café is described as "a meeting place for all that is beautiful and delicious." Here, you can eat locally sourced comfort food and shop for one-of-a-kind vintage jewelry and other unique finds, such as handmade stationery, all under the same roof.

Alice's Arbor, a seasonal American restaurant/grocery/café sits on the border of Clinton Hill and Bed-Stuy and specializes in locally sourced farm-to-table fare. The atmosphere is as great as the food: rustic pallet wood creates a warm and earthy aesthetic. You can share the kale salad with roasted almonds, apples, avocado, pomegranates, and pecorino as your starter.

If you aren't concerned about your gluten intake or calories, try Bergen Bagels, with three Brooklyn locations, where goods are freshly baked around the clock on the premises. They even offer fresh homemade cream cheeses, such as walnut raisin, that taste divine with a steaming cup of freshly brewed coffee.

Clinton Hill's history

Clinton Hill's roots date back to the 1840's, when it was considered in vogue for Brooklyn’s social elite. Residents were attracted to the area because of the common belief that areas with higher elevation were healthier because they placed people literally above the squalor and illness supposedly only found at lower elevations.

For this reason and others, many millionaires of the time – including Pratt Institute namesake and oil magnate Charles Pratt – built magnificent mansions, many of which still stand today, preserved by the Clinton Hill Historic District.

The continued expansion and growth of the area has shaped some of the legendary artists of the borough: Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe were roommates on Hall Street, a block away from where Walt Whitman wrote Leaves of Grass on Ryerson Street.

Block by Block Charm

"Walking down the streets of Clinton Hill make you appreciate good design and history. The stately manors and tree lined blocked make the neighborhood one of the most unique in Brooklyn. "
