A sprawling five-bedroom apartment at the Marquand, a century-old Beaux-Arts Revival building on the Upper East Side that was converted into luxury condominiums two years ago by the HFZ Capital Group, sold for $21,082,866.25 and was the most expensive closed sale of the week, according to city records.

The monthly charges for the sponsor unit, No. 9E, at 11 East 68th Street, on a prime block between Fifth and Madison Avenues, are $18,445.

Madeline Hult Elghanayan and Sabrina Saltiel of Douglas Elliman Real Estate were the listing brokers. Melanie Lazenby, also of Elliman, brought the buyer, whose identity was shielded by the limited liability company Panta Rhei, which means “everything flows” in ancient Greek. (It was also the name of a former progressive rock band from Hungary.)

Ms. Elghanayan said the buyer, described as a New Yorker who “will be living there full time” with family, was drawn to the apartment’s loftlike feel and “terrifically bright” rooms, made possible by enormous windows, two of which are bay style. “And you have fabulous views,” she added, including a glimpse of Central Park.

The residence, entered through a keyed elevator, has five and a half bathrooms, a windowed eat-in kitchen and family room, along with a dining room/library, spread over 4,595 square feet of space designed by Shelton, Mindel and Associates. The master bedroom suite includes spacious dual dressing rooms and an opulent bathroom with onyx stone walls.

The site of the Marquand was once occupied by a grand mansion belonging to the financier and art collector Henry Gurdon Marquand; built in the 1880s, the red-brick and limestone mansion served as a family compound with additional structures. Marquand died in 1902, and by 1913, the mansion was replaced by an 11-story apartment building.

The runner-up last week, at $20,368,500, according to city records, was a four-bedroom four-and-a-half-bath aerie on the 51st floor of One57, the glassy-blue skyscraper where the most expensive single residence in New York City sold earlier this year.

The sponsor unit, No. 51C, at 157 West 57th Street, was sold to a buyer identified as Gloomberg 57 LLC, who promptly relisted the property with Hicham Elkerdoudi, Angela Rapoport and Noble Black of the Corcoran Group for $21,900,000. Monthly charges for the 3,466-square-foot residence, according to the listing, are $5,371.
