Mr. MacArthur envisioned the city streets lined with trees and flowers, and he invested millions of dollars to create a Florida community with hundreds of waterways, rolling terrain, magnificent mature pine and shade trees, and rich foliage. In 1964, MacArthur heard that the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) was looking to relocate its home offices and golf courses; he donated more than $2 million to the project. In March 1965, the clubhouse was completed and the PGA moved in. In 1972, the PGA moved from the property that would become the J.D.M. Country Club and today is known as BallenIsles.

Palm Beach Gardens is home to the top residential golf club developments in Florida, including: PGA National (with five courses deigned by Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, the Fazios and Karl Litten), Ibis Golf & Country Club (three Nicklaus family-designed courses), Mirasol (two courses designed by Arthur Hills and Tom Fazio), and Old Palm (Raymond Floyd), to name a few.
