Quogue
The best way to see Quogue, Westhampton's next door neighbor, is to saunter down its tree-lined streets of elaborate Victorian mansions and exquisitely manicured lawns. They speak so perfectly of another time you must forgive yourself if you think you are time traveling instead of vacation traveling.
Quogue is also known for its 300-acre wildlife refuge. Comb the refuge's seven-mile nature trail for prickly pear cactus, cranberries, and 70 species of wildflowers. Look up and you will see great blue herons, soaring osprey, and piping plover.
When you cross the little bridge to Dune Road, Quogue pays homage to the twentieth century. Modern masterpieces of architecture line the deep barrier beach. The views from these magazine-famous sand castles are elemental: the Atlantic Ocean and the horizon. All you can do is sit back and be awed, once again, by Quogue's abundant splendor.
