Red Hook
Runs from the East River to the Brooklyn-Queens expressway, with Atlantic Avenue as its northern boundary
From Brando to branding: the industrial dockside neighborhood that inspired 'On the Waterfront' is now home to popular grocer Fairway. Van Brunt Street has become restaurant row - hit Baked for biscuits, the Hope and Anchor for burgers and karaoke, Tini for a glass of wine and some artisanal cheese, or the Good Fork for continental food with a Korean twist.
All this and cobblestone streets, too. A spit of land that juts out into the East River (the Dutch word 'hoek' means 'point,' and red is the color of the soil) Red Hook is developing from the waterside out. It's one of the oldest working ports, but also home to new condos that offer amenities such as cherry kitchens, radiant heated floors, and private balconies.
