Laurel
The North Fork is known for its bays and ponds, sound and creeks. Laurel, Mattituck's western neighbor, adds a lake to this list. Although barely a splash by Great Lakes standards, Laurel Lake, part of the 480-acre Laurel Lake Preserve, makes up in beauty what it lacks in size.
The preserve eventually leads to Laurel Links Country Club. Designed by Kelly Blake Moran, the golf course incorporate the land's natural features into the strategic play of each hole. From the base of the links you can practically see the Peconic Bay and maybe an osprey or two gliding on an air current.
The neighborhood restaurant is Cliff's Elbow Too, a seafood-and-steak eatery that carries a long list of East End wines. One of them is, of course, Laurel Lake Vineyards. In addition to its fine wine, the vineyard hosts an annual Harvest Fest where you can clip the vines, pick the grapes, and custom blend your own bottle of wine.
