Peconic
Peconic is such a tiny village that you can blink and drive through it. A better thing to do is eat your way through Peconic, which has some of the North Fork's best edibles.
The North Fork's fruit and vegetable farms are all four-star. Peconic's Sang Lee Farms, though, is a leader of the pack. Its 250 varieties of produce could turn a meat eater into a vegetarian. And their heated greenhouse mesclun makes the winter taste like summer.
Then there are Peconic's acres of vineyards. In addition to five local wineries, Peconic has a delightful outpost of The Tasting Room, which features the wines of four more North Fork vineyards. To truly enjoy this nectar of the gods, have it with cheese from Catapano Dairy farm. That's where the best chevre in the country is made, according to the American Cheese Society.
After a brilliant day of tasting, walk by Albert Einstein's Peconic home. He was on the beach in this storybook village during the summer of 1939. Brains and good taste: a perfect description of Peconic.
