Southold
Anglophiles are quick to point out that Southold, founded in 1640, is the oldest English settlement in New York. Just east of Peconic and west of Greenport on the North Fork, Southold has a rich heritage that underscores why it is remains the only destination for so many.
Farmland still abounds here, forming scenic swathes of open spaces. Dotted with produce stands, antique shops, and top restaurants, Southold also is a hamlet of exquisite homes and farms. And, like other towns on the North Fork, it's made for individuals who prefer to live in homes set on well-tended acres instead of tracts better measured by the square foot.
Hoist a sail and take a tour of Southold's beaches on Long Island Sound and Noyack Bay. They are snapshots of natural beauty are unmarred by crowds. At the end of the day it is time to make a toast to this more than 350 year-old settlement. Of course there is the problem of choosing which wine you want to pour from the 30 local vineyards.
