Get to know Highland Beach

With the exception of one resort, Highland Beach is entirely residential. It has no stoplights, and a significant portion of the traffic seems to be in sea turtles that make the beach their nesting ground. The turtles like the quiet, and so do the people who call Highland Beach home. The town sits on a high point betwixt the ocean and the Intracoastal, and between the comparative bustle of Delray Beach and Boca Raton. Amazing shopping, dining, and culture are within easy access, yet not so close as the beach. The housing market includes some (large) single-family homes, but the most common residences are mid-rise condos and townhomes.

Highland Beach has around 4,000 year-round residents, a figure that just about doubles over the winter months. There are fewer operating businesses here than you can count on one hand, setting the relaxed pace you'd expect for a town that lies entirely on a barrier island. Its pleasures are simple but plentiful: Natural treasure is everywhere if you know where to look — like Yamato Rock, a meteor-esque limestone outcropping right off shore that's a popular fishing and snorkeling spot. Latitudes, at Delray Sands Resort, offers fine oceanfront dining, and a full spectrum of restaurant options lies right across the Intracoastal in Boca and Delray.
