Marathon Commerce & Culture
Recreation on the islands is, unsurprisingly, water-related. It offers unparalleled diving, snorkeling, and spearfishing in the surrounding wrecks and reefs, and great kayaking and paddleboarding in estuaries and bays. The beaches are Keys-perfect, and the accompanying weather is island-ideal 12 months a year. Hiking trails and parks keep nature close even when you’re not getting your feet wet. Fresh catches of fish, lobster, and stone crab are the highlight of the restaurant scene, where locals and tourists drink in the views along with their tropical cocktails. Restaurants and shops are spread out along the 10-mile archipelago, but don’t go looking for high-society shopping here; while there are plenty of fun and quirky boutiques as well as stores for the basics, most of the commerce here seems to be bait and sunscreen. Marathon is the home of Florida Keys Marathon International Airport, which accommodates charter flights and two base operations for private and corporate jets, making Marathon an easy and relaxing getaway for the jet set.
