Marathon is in the middle of the Florida Keys — about an hour from each of Key West and Key Largo — claiming 13 islands within its city limits. A vintage Old Keys vibe permeates the city, and every aspect of the easygoing community is turned toward the water. It comes as no surprise, then, that Marathon is a boating and fishing paradise. Easy aquatic access makes Marathon an ideal base or stopover for cruisers, efficiently served by the city’s thousands of wet and dry slips. Charters and private vessels leave every morning for fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, while smaller boats fish the reefs and flats. Anglers from around the world travel to reel in Marathon’s billfish and tuna, and tarpon and mahi-mahi are plentiful all around the islands.

Marathon Commerce & Culture

If it’s not apparent, recreation on Marathon skews heavily toward water-based activities. Marathon offers unparalleled diving, snorkeling, and spearfishing in the surrounding seas — plus great kayaking and paddleboarding in estuaries and bays. Beaches are marvelous, only boosted by the year-round island-ideal climate. Meanwhile, hiking trails and parks keep nature close even when you don’t want to get your feet wet. Fresh catches of fish, lobster, and stone crab highlight the dining scene, where you’ll drink in the sunset views right along with a tropical cocktail. Shops are spread out along Marathon’s under 10-mile length, including outlets for beach basics and the kind of quirky boutiques only the Florida Keys can offer. Despite the fish that often find themselves on the menu, Marathon cherishes its native sea creatures with organizations dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating dolphins and sea turtles.
