East Marion history

As Southold grew in population, the need for newer developments became more and more important. East Marion was founded around 1660, and at the time was called Oysterponds Upper Neck due to the plentiful oyster ponds in the area. In its earliest days, Oysterponds Upper Neck had several hundred acres of land that were divided up among several owners.

Many residents fled Oysterponds Upper Neck entirely during the American Revolution in order to avoid British soldiers. This was a devastating time for those in the North Fork area, as fights broke out between the British and the locals who chose to stay. The War of 1812, on the other hand, was a more collaborative effort, and locals actually established a partnership with warships in the area, a move that proved beneficial and even profitable for residents.

Later, Oysterponds Upper Neck became known as Rocky Point. However, the name was too similar to another local community, and it was renamed East Marion in honor of General Francis Marion, who fought in the American Revolution. (“East” was added because there was already another area called Marion in New York.)
