The neighboring communities of Newtown, Yardley, and Washington Crossing are often grouped together, all three connected by history and proximity. Washington Crossing, is, of course, where George Washington stood when he crossed the Delaware in 1776, while Newtown was founded by William Penn as a spot for Philadelphians to build their country retreats, as well as serving as a base for Washington during his campaigns. The towns have more of a small-town feel than their suburban location might suggest: Here you’ll find Newtown Theatre, which hosts live theater and music shows, as well as movie screenings; Newtown Exchange, a book-and-record store; and Shady Brook Farm, beloved for its pick-your-own-fruit harvests and family festivals. You’ll find lots of great dining options here, including branches of several popular local chains like Owowcow, which sources its ice cream ingredients from local farms, and Jules Thin Crust, which serves super-thin rectangular pizza pies.
