Tavernier

Tavernier marks the southern terminus of the island of Key Largo and shares a channel on its own southern border with the Plantation Key portion of Islamorada. It has good access to the retail and restaurants clustered in the northern Keys and is a mere hour-and-a-half from downtown Miami. Residents of Tavernier mostly live in single-family dwellings, about half of which are blessed with coveted backyard docks. Florida’s native birds are helped back to their flying ways at a local sanctuary and rehabilitation center, which serves avian creatures of all kinds — owls, blue jays, cormorants, and more. Close water proximity means plenty of access to charter boats for aquatic activities like snorkeling, fishing, and diving. It also means sandy shores and calming waves like those at Harry Harris Beach and Park, a more easy-going alternative.
