    The Heights

The Heights is perched upon the Palisades and is just an elevator ride or a walk down the “100 Steps” to Hoboken’s light rail stations. Despite its proximity to Hoboken, the Heights has officially been part of Jersey City since 1873, when it lost its separate identity as Hudson City and became a neighborhood within the municipality. But after more than a century as part of Jersey City, the Heights still manages to retain a feeling of an artsy small town—a quieter cousin to busy downtown. In the Heights, you’ll find a treasure trove of Victorian and Edwardian houses, generally available at a more affordable price point than in downtown, and pretty, strollable, leafy streets decorated with commissioned murals throughout. In 2013, the zoning laws changed to allow artists to have live/work spaces in the eastern section of the Heights, now known as the Riverview Arts District.
