Dorado
Dorado’s name means “golden” in Spanish and residents certainly treasure living in this beautiful town about 15 miles west of San Juan. Dorado is known for a resort-like lifestyle, with its beautiful, golden coast and three Robert Trent Jones–designed golf courses. The never-crowded beaches boast calm waters and soft sand, and plenty of palm trees for shade and relaxation. Dorado is also home to the Dorado Beach resort, which comprises a series of privately owned luxury villas and a Ritz-Carlton hotel. Dorado Beach was originally purchased by Alfred T. Livingston in 1905 to grow coconuts and grapefruits, before being bought by Laurance Rockefeller in 1955, who transformed it into one of the first eco-resorts. The resort had a grand re-opening in 2019, with completely renovated buildings and grounds, which were re-built after Hurricane Maria.
