East Nashville

East Nashville is the capital for the creative class in Nashville, transforming the neighborhood into hipster central in the last decade. Artists of all stripes started moving to the area, decorating buildings with frequently changing murals, and soon, East Nashville became as well known for its restaurants and quirky, independent stores as for its upscale, bohemian vibe. Fanny’s House of Music is one of Taylor Swift’s favorite places to shop—this women-owned temple of rock buys, rents, and sells guitars, drums, and gear, as well as offering lessons. Founded with the philosophy of being Nashville’s “most comfortable music store,” Fanny’s welcomes everyone to learn how to rock out. East Nashville serves as the collective name for about a dozen smaller commercial and residential neighborhoods, the latter being a home to a mix of architecture—you’ll see often bungalows from the 1940s sitting next to a newly built condo.

Living in the Nashville Metropolitan Area

Nashville’s nickname is “Music City,” and it has steadily been climbing the charts as one of the best places to live in the country. The quality that sets Nashville apart is its spirit—something that’s hard to quantify, but that touches every part of the metro area. Of course, by any measure, Nashville is a powerhouse, as it serves as the state capital; a well-known college town, anchored by Vanderbilt University; a major center for healthcare; and as a burgeoning destination for tech, with both Amazon and Oracle building major campuses in town. But it’s the generations of musicians who have imbued Nashville with its distinct personality. Nashville is synonymous with country music, but the city’s musicians can’t be so easily defined, as they play everything from the blues to indie rock. Music is Nashville’s heart and soul, creating a soundtrack to every part of life here.
