152 East 94th Street, a Hidden Architectural Treasure
Built in 1937 by Russell Boak & Hyman Paris, designers of some of the most inventive and distinctive Manhattan apartment buildings of the period. Before launching their own firm both worked as draftsmen for noted architect Emery Roth. The building represents a unique fusion of Art Deco and Arte Moderne styles. Its red brick façade features decorative work on window lintels and eleventh-floor arches. More definitive classicism is seen in Greek key designs on the basement window grilles above the limestone base and in the recessed, brass-framed sconces that illuminate the building's sidewalk near the entryway. Of particular interest is the step-down entry. Brass rails top wrought-iron fences of geometric squares, circles, and arrowheads, echoed in brass-framed glass doors with wrought-iron arrows and geometrics. The fluted entry surround has stone piers topped with Greek key capitals, surmounted with a modern interpretation of the classical broken pediment and urn. The interior lobby floor features a black and white terrazzo floor with a unique eight-pointed star inset. Original apartment interiors reflect these themes with sunken living rooms, and elaborate iron and brass railings and more.
