Greenwich Co-Op In Converted Historic Greek Revival Church
Built in the Greek Revival style, this former church designed by architect Samuel Thomson, was constructed between 1839 and 1846. It was the offspring of the old Third Free Presbyterian Church which once stood at the corner of Houston and Thompson Streets. When built it was known as the Thirteenth Street Presbyterian. Fires in 1855 and 1902 almost destroyed the building. A merger in 1910 with the nearby Fourteenth Street Presbyterian lead to a combined congregation which was known as the Greenwich Presbyterian Church. Another merger took place in 1956 with Chelsea Presbyterian, and the church was renamed Village Presbyterian. Later it would be known as the Village Community Church and the building would be shared with a synagogue. By the 1970s membership had decreased and the synagogue moved to Gramercy Park. The church wholly disbanded in 1975. The building was converted to a cooperative in 1982 and consists of 15 units across 5 floors.
