Get to know Kips Bay

Starting at 23rd Street in the south and running to 34th Street in the north, and bordered by the East River on one side and Second, Third, or Lexington (depending on whose definition you use) on the west, Kips Bay is an unusual pocket of Manhattan. While not far from either Midtown or Union Square, it is a surprisingly quiet area of both contemporary towers and older rowhouses. Its stretch of First Avenue is dominated by NYU buildings, including its medical school. Inland, the neighborhood experienced a period of revitalization in the 1960s, with new apartment blocks constructed on large plazas, perhaps best exemplified by I.M. Pei’s Kips Bay Towers. Next to them, the Kips Bay Plaza is a center of commercial life, with an AMC and a Fairway, while small restaurants and stores continue to thrive, mostly along Second and Third avenues.
