Prospect Park South
Prospect Park South is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, within the community of Flatbush. Prospect Park South was developed at the end of the 19th century by visionary developer Dean Alvord as a community of large, individually-designed homes. A number of the homes in the community are considered mansions, telling of a historical period of wealth and prominent individuals of means. The nearby Alvord Mansion, built by the developer of Prospect Park South for his own family, and later the home of the Matz family, the founders of the Ex-lax Company, located on the south side of Albemarle Road bordering on the railway, was abandoned and then torn down after a fire in 1955. Prospect Park South was designated as a historic district by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1979.
Some of professional baseball's finest athletes, including Sandy Koufax, Joe Torre, and Manny Ramirez, once honed their skills at the Prospect Park Parade Ground. Re-opened in spring 2004 after a four-year renovation, the legendary fields on the 40-acre site serve local schools, leagues, and clubs for baseball, tennis, soccer, basketball, football, and netball for both children and adults.
The new Parade Ground features eleven reconstructed athletic fields, including a premiere baseball diamond with covered dugouts, bleachers, and night lighting. The reconstruction also includes three additional baseball fields, two softball fields, one football field, one soccer field, three multi-purpose fields, basketball, volleyball, and netball courts, as well as full-service concessions facilities and new picnic areas, seating, and landscaping. And, with artificial turf, five of the new fields can be used year-round. Designed and managed by the Prospect Park Alliance with intensive community input, the Parade Ground is now ready for the next generation of Brooklyn's star athletes.
