Greenwich Village

Living in Greenwich Village

Half a century after the days of Jack Kerouac and his beatnik brethren, "the Village", as the locals call it, attracts those seeking the consummate Manhattan experience. House hunters are inevitably drawn to this lush and leafy neighborhood, which contains several community gardens. Jefferson Market garden is a welcoming and popular market situated in a verdant landscape – you won't want to miss the free jazz concerts held there most Sunday evenings.

Waverly Mews Co-Op

Built as a hat factory in 1891, Waverly Mews is comprised of three six storey wood-frame buildings which were combined when it was converted to a rental property in 1973. The target tenants at the time were enrolled at NYU. 118 apartments were created, all large loft-like studios with high ceilings. A few apartments have been combined to create one-bedrooms in addition to the ten original ones. Many apartments have been renovated and owners have discovered original beams, columns and brick walls which have been left exposed to add architectural interest. The building became a co-op in 1984. At the time, it was a land-lease building and the land was owned by NYU. The building went co-op in a non-eviction plan and the land was purchased by the sponsor as a condition for co-op conversion. The entrance was originally on Waverly Place, hence the address. However, upon conversion, the developer chose what had been the delivery entrance on Greene Street for access because of its charm. Iron gates open into a brick courtyard with seasonal plantings and seating area. The courtyard and roof deck are wonderful amenities which afford residents the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors without leaving home. There are laundry rooms on every floor.

Additional features of this building include: Live-in Super, Pet friendly, Common Roof Deck with Skyline Views, Laundry room on every floor, Landscaped Courtyard Entrance.
