Living in Jackson County
Located next to Athens-Clarke County, Jackson County is Athens’ rural sibling, boasting plenty of space to spread out and find your bliss. Jackson County is considered a part of the greater Atlanta region, with the drive being anywhere between an hour to two hours to Atlanta. Closer to home, Jackson County locals like to stop by Commerce to shop at Tanger Outlets and Commerce Crossing. You might also recognize Commerce from its depiction in Olive Ann Burns’s Cold Sassy Tree, where Commerce was fictionalized as the titular Cold Sassy. Horschton (say “HOOSH-ton” like the locals) borders Hall County and is generally considered a suburb of Gainesville. The most well-known town is county seat Jefferson, but all of Jackson County is growing rapidly, as Georgians search for more space outside larger cities like Athens and Atlanta.
