Filled with wonder at every turn, Spanish Town is the largest community on Virgin Gorda and the second-largest in the British Virgin Islands, reigning as its first territorial capital from 1680 until 1741. It’s located on the far southern tip of the island on the opposite side from North Sound, complete with its own airport and ferry terminal. The present-day city was largely settled by miners from Cornwall, England, who mined the belt of rich copper deposits beneath the craggy coastal bluffs with imported machinery one can still visit today at Copper Mine National Park. Greater Spanish Town is also home to The Baths, a beachside assemblage of gigantic granite boulders that’s a naturally-occurring obstacle course of underwater caves and Instagram opportunities.
