Living on Kauai

Hawaii’s oldest and northernmost major island is draped in forested green valleys, jagged cliffs, and cascading waterfalls. It’s no wonder Kauai is also referred to as the Garden Isle. Although it has an easygoing atmosphere, it is abundant with outdoor activities. And while there’s a lot of ground to cover on land, most of the island is explorable only by air or sea. For the nature lover, Kauai makes for an adventurous playground. One main attraction on Kauai is the towering sea cliffs along the Na Pali Coast. This magnificent wild terrain — typically experienced aboard a boat or a helicopter — offers some of the world's greatest hiking opportunities, including the stunning 11-mile Kalalau Trail, which follows the coast from reef-protected Ke'e Beach into the pristine Kalalau Valley.
