Get to Know San Zeno

San Zeno is the residential neighborhood surrounding the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore, built in the 12th century and named for St. Zeno, the patron saint of Verona. Located just west of Verona’s Historic Centre, San Zeno has the same mix of medieval, Renaissance, and modern architecture as its more well-known neighbor, but is noticeably quieter and less crowded. San Zeno is bordered by the Adige River and by the Parco delle Mura, a verdant park created on top of Verona’s former defensive city walls. These natural borders give San Zeno the feel of a small village, with its quiet streets perfectly suited for an after-dinner stroll. San Zeno is also home to a monthly flea market in Piazza San Zeno — it’s a favorite for treasure hounds with everything from antique furniture to boxes of vinyl records for sale.

Living in Verona

Verona is the largest city in the Veneto region in northeastern Italy and one of the loveliest. A charmingly picturesque place, Verona is set on the banks of the Adige River and next to the hills of Valpolicella. (The province of Verona includes the city itself, as well as the surrounding countryside, including parts of Lake Garda.) The city — built at the crossroads of major routes — began its rise during the Roman Empire and continued its dominance through the medieval, Renaissance, and modern eras. When Shakespeare set Romeo and Juliet in Verona, it became romance central, with millions coming to visit. Today, Verona is a blend of these many historic influences, boasting architecture ranging from Roman amphitheaters to Art Nouveau villas.
