Get to Know Port Washington

Port Washington sits between Manhasset Bay and Hemstead Bay and is the perfect Long Island suburb for those who love being surrounded by the ocean. There are plenty of opportunities to get on the water, whether it’s on a sailboat, a kayak, or a racing shell, and there’s a yacht club in town, as well as several community rowing and kayaking clubs. Many of Port Washington’s houses and condo buildings have access to private beaches and docks, and even landlubbers can enjoy the view of the bay from the Town Dock Park or the many waterfront restaurants. Port Washington is both the name of the main hamlet, as well as the greater surrounding region, which includes the villages of Baxter Estates, Manorhaven, Sands Point, and part of Flower Hill. Port Washington has one of the fastest commutes into Penn Station — just 36 minutes — as it’s on an express line of the LIRR.

Living in Nassau County

Nassau County’s North Shore, also known as the Gold Coast, is where to go to live the good life. Here, you’ll find waterfront towns filled with splendid real estate, and all located just a short train ride away from New York City. In the early and mid-1900s, the Gold Coast was home to palatial properties, inspiring F. Scott Fitzgerald to set The Great Gatsby in his fictional versions of Great Neck and Sands Point, describing houses where the lawn stretched from the beach to the front door. Those estates are mostly gone, many transformed into nature preserves, museums, and in one case, into the grounds of the North Shore University Hospital. The lure of living on the North Shore is still strong though, as newcomers and natives alike are drawn to the prospect of backyards with enough space for a playset, warm and welcoming communities, and a quick commute to Manhattan.
