Get to Know Mississauga

Mississauga is a formidable city with its own distinct personality — an identity that gradually developed as it emerged from the shadows of its neighbor Toronto. For a long time, the region merely existed as a loose grouping of villages and rural hamlets that were simply referred to as Toronto Township. In fact, in the 1920s, the area was considered far away enough from the city itself that Torontonians would build weekend cottages there to get away from it all. Much of Mississauga’s modern rise can be credited to Hazel McCallion, the city’s long-time mayor who served from 1978 to 2014, entering office soon after the city was incorporated in 1974. McCallion took a sleepy group of decentralized towns and turned them into a multi-cultural urban powerhouse, making Mississauga the sixth biggest city in Canada. Today, Mississauga is nobody’s suburb, but a destination in its own right.

In fact, it’s North America’s biggest tech cluster outside of Silicon Valley and home to more than 15,000 tech companies, which employ more than 300,000 people. Thanks to this concentration of innovative entrepreneurship and economic development, the cities along the Toronto-Waterloo Corridor have grown into significant metropolises and dense suburbs, each with its own distinct personality. Though every town is different, they all share a commitment to the great outdoors, with beautiful hiking and biking trails crisscrossing the region and plenty of opportunities to sail, kayak, or canoe on Lake Ontario and its nearby tributaries. This region is incredibly diverse, with residents choosing to move to Southern Ontario from around the world, leading to a food scene that can only be described as epic and delicious.
